Be Their Voice: Standing Up for the Beagles at MBR Acres

Because every animal deserves a life free from suffering, fear and exploitation.

There are causes that deserve more than a passing glance. Causes that ask us to stop, look beyond our everyday lives and think about the animals whose voices are so often unheard.

The beagles at MBR Acres, in Wyton, Cambridgeshire, are one such cause.

Most people would be surprised to learn that dogs are still bred in the UK specifically to be supplied to laboratories for scientific experiments. Yet this is the reality for thousands of beagles whose lives begin in a very different way from the lives we imagine for our beloved companions.

The dogs behind the cause

MBR Acres is a breeding facility that supplies beagles to laboratories involved in animal testing. According to the Save the Dogs UK campaign, the facility breeds up to approximately 2,000 beagles a year for this purpose.

Beagles are often chosen for laboratory testing because of their temperament and manageable size. But behind these descriptions are individual animals: curious, affectionate and sentient beings, each capable of experiencing fear, pain, comfort and happiness.

They are dogs. They deserve the same kindness, protection and consideration that we would want for any dog sharing our homes.

It is difficult to reconcile the image of a beagle enjoying a walk, playing with a favourite toy or curling up beside someone who loves them with the reality that other beagles are born into a system in which their lives are destined for laboratory use.

These dogs are not commodities. They are living beings, and their welfare matters.

A future where compassion and science can go hand in hand

This is not simply about one facility. It is also about asking bigger questions about the future of scientific research and our responsibility towards animals.

Science continues to evolve, and modern research methods are creating opportunities to develop alternatives to animal testing. The challenge is to encourage progress, investment and a genuine commitment to methods that do not rely on animals suffering.

We believe scientific advancement and compassion should never be opposing values. Progress should mean finding better ways forward, for people and animals alike.

The Save the Dogs UK campaign is working to raise awareness of the beagles at MBR Acres and to bring an end to laboratory beagle breeding and, ultimately, the use of dogs in testing.

Small actions can help create a bigger voice

Change rarely happens because of one person or one moment. It grows when people come together, share information, ask questions and refuse to ignore something simply because it is uncomfortable to face.

That is why grassroots campaigns and community outreach are so important.

Recently, Save the Dogs UK organised an outreach event outside the Lush store in Chelmsford, bringing together volunteers and supporters to speak with the public, distribute information and collect signatures for a parliamentary petition.

Every conversation offered an opportunity to reach someone who might never have heard about these dogs before. Every leaflet shared helped spread awareness. Every signature added another voice calling for change.

We were genuinely touched to see Teddy’s Barn acknowledged by the campaign for our small contribution of plant-based dog treats for supporters to share at outreach events.

It is a small gesture, but one we were very happy to make. We are grateful to everyone involved in making these events possible and, above all, for keeping the focus where it belongs: on the dogs.

What can we do to help?

We may not all be able to attend an event, but there are ways for everyone to make their voice heard.

Every dog deserves a chance

At Teddy’s Barn, we believe compassion should extend to all animals, not just those fortunate enough to have a loving home.

We celebrate the dogs who fill our lives with joy, but we must also remember those who have never had the opportunity to experience the simple things we take for granted: freedom, play, comfort, affection and the security of knowing they are safe.

The beagles at MBR Acres deserve to be seen. They deserve to be heard. And they deserve a future that is not defined by the purpose for which they were bred.

We might not be able to change everything overnight, but we can choose not to look away. We can speak up, share their story and stand alongside those working towards a kinder future.

Because every dog matters. And until every cage is empty, their story deserves to be told.

With compassion for all animals,

Teddy’s Barn 🐾
